Hi all,

Probably some of you faced the issue with left/right black borders.
Here's how they look:

This article will explain when they show up and how to get rid of them.

The borders show up when the HDFVR video area (the black area) has a different aspect ratio than the aspect ratio of the video stream coming from the webcam.
Just as when showing a 4:3 video on a 16:9 monitor you have black borders to the right and left of the video, HDFVR will add black borders where needed (left/right or top/bottom) to keep the aspect ratio.

As a website owner, you have control over both the aspect ratio of the video stream coming from the webcam and of HDFVR's black video area. This means we can prevent black borders.

Here's how to prevent black borders:

Let's say for example we configure HDFVR to request a 640x480 video from the webcam.
Let's also assume the user has a good webcam that supports 640x480.

We now need to configure HDFVR's size so that the black video area is exactly 640 width and 480 height.

Calculating the width of HDFVR:

To calculate the width necessary to create a 640px width black video area, just add 2 paddings (padding is a setting in to 640.
The default value for the padding variable is 2, so our final width will be 644 (640+2x2).

Calculating the height of HDFVR:

To calculate the height necessary to create a 480 height black video area, just add 3 paddings to 480 and the height of the menu (30px).
We will have then a height of 516 (3x2+480+30).

To set the new dimensions for HDFVR, edit the .html file used and change the width and height of the <object> and <embed> tags with the calculated values.
For more info on how the HDFVR size, see this article.

However, in some cases the webcam does not support the desired resolution so HDFVR will be forced to add borders.

Thanks for putting this up. I think calculating the height of HDFVR would be really helpful.

HDFVR 1.1 (Waterbreath build 609) also fixes the empty strip at the bottom issue:
